Fall Family Photos | 10 Coordinating Outfit Ideas + Tips

If you are like me, you are currently mulling over family wardrobe options for quite a few special occasions. Halloween is quickly approaching, and the holiday season will be here before we know it! Right in between, we have our fall family photos scheduled. Fall “mini sessions” have become very popular with most local photographers. It’s a perfect chance to get a few great family photos, in a relatively painless short session, with plenty of time to include them on your holiday cards!

I always love the finished products of our family photo sessions, and am so happy that we have captured the kids’ growth over the years. However, I have to admit that there is usually a fair amount of planning, with a little anxiety thrown in, prior to the session. Some elements, such as the weather, are simply out of our control and we must make the best of the day. But with a little advance planning and inspiration, these photos will turn out beautifully!

We often times take family photos on our beach vacation during the summer and I just use one of those for our Christmas card pictures, so we haven’t taken a Fall family photo in a couple of years.   Here are a few photos from our last one which was a short mini session with the kids from 2 years ago.

Our family photo session is coming up soon, and with that in mind, I sat down recently and created some inspiration boards of coordinated clothing for all members of the family, in various color schemes. If you have been looking for some hints or feeling uninspired, take a look at these – I hope that some or all of these themes will suit your style! I had such a great time putting these collages together. I hope that you enjoy browsing them as much as I loved creating them!

Blue and green has always been a favorite color combination for me. These colors look great on just about everyone, and this board has a classic and preppy feel.

I am in love with all of the Liberty floral prints. They are so bright and feminine, and work in any season. I created the next board with a few items in a fall-toned Liberty print, and a few items in primary colors to complement it.

How beautiful would a group of warm neutral colors look against the fall colors in nature? I love this collage and think that this combination can look so unique and fresh.

I love this brown and aqua color combination because it is so unexpected. The aqua looks so crisp against the warmth of the brown. This color combination would also be perfect at Thanksgiving!

I titled this last collage ‘Fall Leaves,’ because I thought it perfectly picks up the start of the fall color changes, as the green makes way for the yellow. This combination is also a little bit different, and I love the overall warm feel. This would be great for early fall and warmer climates.

Here’s a few quick tips for family shoots with kids that I’ve learned:

1. Keep the shoots short (1 hour max, 30 minutes is best)
2. Wardrobe changes on kids are really hard to achieve.  Stick to one outfit.
3. Bribe your toddlers with M&M’s or marshmallows if you are worried about stains.  It’s the best way to get them to cooperate.
4.  Give lots of praise.
5. Do your “favorite shots” first. If you have something in mind that you are dying to do for a shoot, do those first.  The early pictures always turn out the best before everyone becomes tired and cranky!
6.  {Bonus Tip} Relax and laugh! These shots always come out the best and even add some music in the background if you find that helps your kiddos.
