Last week we checked into the Henderson Beach Resort in Destin just an hour down the road from us.  We had family coming into town from Colorado for the week and we were celebrating one of our cousins 60th birthday!  This is the second Summer in a row that we have met them in Destin and stayed at the Henderson Resort and I am excited to tell you all about it.

If you’re dreaming of sugar-white sand, emerald waters, and a fun-filled hotel experience, The Henderson Beach in Destin, Florida, is exactly where you want to be.  This trip we spent a long weekend at the charming resort and left feeling spoiled because when we went to check-in on our first day; they had upgraded us from a one bedroom hotel room to their two bedroom (plus a bunk room) vacation rental condo!  It felt so new and was so luxurious and spacious!  The kids were so excited.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Destin

The main resort (where we stayed) is beautifully designed in classic coastal style, with manicured grounds, grand architecture, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Families and couples alike love it for its easy beach access, thoughtful activities, and multiple pools—including an adults-only pool and a lively family pool with a lazy river.

Tucked just steps away from the more expansive Henderson Beach Resort, The Henderson Park Inn offers a more intimate, adults-only retreat. This is the original building which is a bit older but offers great service and beachfront views—Southern hospitality at its finest.  The Inn is stretched along the gorgeous white sand coastline and offers beach access to all the guests staying at the Henderson Beach Resort.

While The Henderson Park Inn offers a peaceful, adults-only experience, the adjacent Henderson Beach Resort brings family-friendly luxury to the same stunning stretch of Destin coastline. 

Rooms With a View

Our room was part of the Parkside Condos and had a partial Gulf view and was steps away one of several pools located on property. The décor is light, airy, and coastal chic—think soft blues, driftwood accents, and luxurious bedding. Each room comes with thoughtful touches like plush robes and a Nespresso machine.  Our condo had two King bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and then a small set of bunk beds tucked away by the washer and dryer.  We also had another full bath just steps from the bunk room.  We had a nice size living space as well as a small bar counter and a fully stocked kitchen.  

Private Beach Perks

The real highlight? The Inn has its own private stretch of beach with complimentary chairs and umbrellas for guests. It never felt crowded, and the water was crystal clear—perfect for floating, snorkeling, or just relaxing with a book in hand. They even offer beachside food and drink service, which felt like such a treat.

If you are staying at the larger Henderson Beach Resort, you have complimentary access to the beach just across the street and you can rent your own chairs and umbrella for the day.  

Resort Highlights

Full-Service Spa: The Salamander Spa is an oasis within an oasis. Think massages, facials, steam rooms, and a full menu of treatments to melt away stress.

Dining Options: From fresh seafood at Horizons to casual bites at the Rooftop bar (we loved the sushi) and Primrose Italian, there’s a great mix of dining options. Don’t miss sunset drinks at the rooftop—it’s one of the best spots to watch the sky turn pink over the Gulf.

Family Fun: There’s a daily roster of activities for kids, including nature walks, crafts, movie nights, and games by the pool. Bike rentals, paddleboards, and beach toys are also available.  We had some fun joining in on the hula hoop and limbo contest poolside.

Poppy’s Kids Club:  We didn’t utilize this service on this trip but they offer a kids club that you can reserve ahead of time in the Spring and Summer to let your kids play while you enjoy a little adult time to yourself. 

Sprinkles Ice Cream & Coffee Shop: The kids loved being able to grab ice cream at this cute little shop after a day of swimming in the pool and the adults loved being able to grab a quick bite for breakfast if needed and a morning Starbucks coffee. 

Access to Henderson Beach State Park: The resort sits right next to one of Destin’s prettiest protected beach parks, perfect for a morning walk, dolphin spotting, or an unspoiled beach day.

Events & Weddings: Many couples choose The Henderson Beach Resort for destination weddings, vow renewals, or romantic getaways. The lawn and beachfront venues are stunning backdrops for special moments.  They had a STUNNING wedding happening while we there for the weekend, I was really wishing to sneak in and be a part of it!!

Although Destin has plenty of dining options, we loved that the Henderson had quite a few dining options right on property.  By day, we dined at Primrose each morning for a wonderful breakfast buffet (menu options available as well) and then poolside each day.  Each pool has food and beverage service and often time’s fun entertainment for the family. For the evenings you have several different restaurants to choose from:

Horizons: Casual seafood cuisine with a view of the Gulf Coast.  They also have great pizza options.

Primrose: Upscale Italian menu with wonderful seafood options as well. 

The Rooftop: A beautiful bar and dining option with small plates and a great sushi menu.

Beach Walk Cafe: A beautiful southern fine dining experience with an assortment of seafood dishes  to choose from.

Exploring Destin

We ventured off property for a bit of exploring—Destin Harbor Boardwalk, Big Kahunas Waterpark (read our experience here), and browsing shops at Grand Boulevard—but honestly, it was always nice to get back to our condo.  If you’re looking for ideas and things to do in Destin, you can read my full Destin travel guide here.  We’ve spent many of days in Destin since we are only an hour away and always enjoy exploring new (and old) restaurants and fun things to do with the kids.

Final Thoughts

Our stay at The Henderson Beach Resort was everything we hoped for and more—beautiful, fun, entertaining and perfectly positioned to soak in the best of Destin.  Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway (stay at the Inn), a quick weekend retreat or a big family trip, this beachside haven is the perfect destination.   I love that it had everything we needed right at our fingertips.  The Destin traffic is known to get pretty bad in the Summer, so not having to get in our car and leave in the evenings or for some of our daytime fun was quite a luxury.  

I would highly recommend this spot in Destin and loved all it had to offer for a family with kids.  I look forward to enjoying it again in the future.

On our recent family trip to Destin, we took a break from the beach and pool and spent the day splashing, sliding, and soaking up the sun at Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park. It was the perfect way to keep the kids entertained and cool down from that Florida heat.  I have been going to Big Kahunas since I was a kid and it was so much fun to take my kids and their cousins for some water park fun!

Whether you’re planning a beach-heavy vacation to Destin or just need a day of non-sandy fun, here’s everything we loved about Big Kahuna’s — plus our best tips to help your family make the most of it!

Top Highlights from Our Visit

1. Slides for All Ages

From the thrilling Jumanji and Kowabunga Racer to family-friendly options like the Lazy River, there’s something for every comfort level. Our crew rotated between the splash zones and the twisty slides all day!

2. Kiddie Play Zones

Younger kids will love Buccaneer Cove and the Tiki River Run — smaller slides, water sprays, and safe areas for littles to play while parents rest nearby.

3. Wave Pool Fun

A huge hit with everyone! We floated and jumped the waves in the Giant Wave Pool, which was just the right mix of excitement and relaxation.

4. Chill Time in the Lazy River

This became our mid-day cool down zone. Grab a tube and let the current carry you along while you catch your breath — it’s a win for tired feet and overheated parents alike.  

Quick Tips to Know Before You Go

 1. Arrive Early

Get there just after opening and you can easily grab chairs in the shade. Crowds pick up by lunchtime, especially on weekends.

 2. Purchase Tickets Online

Skip the line and save a little by booking in advance on their website. Watch for combo tickets if you want to do the adventure park too!

 3. Bring Water Shoes

The pavement gets hot, and these are helpful for little feet (and yours!) when walking between attractions. We didn’t have them this trip and I sure wish we did!

 4. Use a Locker

Use a locker if you would like to store your phones, wallets, and towels in a locker so we could roam hands-free. You can rent them near the front entrance.  This trip we chose to just put our beach bags at our seats and leave them there for the day and they were totally fine.  It just depends on how trusting you are

 5. Reapply Sunscreen Frequently

There’s not a ton of shade unless you have a cabana. Bring a waterproof sunscreen and don’t forget ears, noses, and shoulders.

 6. Cabanas Are a Nice Upgrade

If you’re spending the whole day and want your own shaded spot, a cabana is worth it — especially if you’re with a group or have little ones needing breaks.  The best thing about the cabanas is that you get your own personal waiter/waitress to serve drinks and food directly to you.  This can be huge on days that it is really crowded and the food and drink lines are long.

 7. Food is Easy Inside

No outside food is allowed, but the park has plenty of options. We grabbed pizza, pretzels and frozen treats — no complaints from our crew!  They do have a bar with adult beverages as well!

 Final Thoughts

Big Kahuna’s was a full day of laughs, splashes, and water-filled fun — the perfect mid-vacation adventure that gave us a break from the beach and a ton of memories. If you’re visiting Destin with kids, this one is a can’t-miss.

 Would we go back?

Absolutely. Next time we might even try the Adventure Park ropes course across the way.

I have saved these pictures and am just now documenting our family trip to Destin, from Spring Break 2021. We went with friends, who have kids of similar ages to ours. A great time was had by all!

This was a great family trip. Lots of quality time and fun memories packed into one short week. The kids loved bringing their friends along, and so did we! It is so nice to have this little getaway available, so close to home.

Since we are approaching Spring Break time, I thought I would roll out a few travel guides that I have had in my draft box and needed to finish up.  Destin is near and dear to my heart, so hopefully this list helps you out!

We have traveled to Destin for my entire life (we even lived here for a short time when I was an infant) and it has always been one of our families favorite destination spots.  We have been lucky enough to have a condo here for many years that my Dad left to my brothers and I and it has always been one of my happy places.  Destin is a one hour drive from where we live in Pensacola/Gulf Breeze, FL and it always feels like a nice escape for us.  It has great restaurants, beautiful beaches, shopping and a lot to do with the kids! I have rounded up some of our favorite things to do and places to stay in Destin below. I hope this helpful for you!

HOW TO GET TO DESTIN

Fort Walton Airport is your closest airport to Destin.  You also have an option to fly into Pensacola or Panama City airport which are both less than 1.5 hours away.

We spent last weekend with friends down in Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin, Fl.  Although we have stayed in Destin many of times, we have never stayed inside Baytowne Wharf.  Our friends had been back in November and loved the way you could walk to everything and all the activities they had for the kids.  So they found a condo at The Grand in Baytowne that we could all fit into. 

I am going to go ahead and state that I understand traveling is not for everyone right now.  This trip was one hour from our home and masks were worn inside, but did not have to be worn outdoors.  You can keep all your opinions about travel to yourself and I applaud you if you have been perfectly quarantined citizen

Our condo was super spacious with gorgeous views.  It had four bedrooms and five bathrooms with an extra tv room upstairs for kids.  All the bedrooms had nice size closets if you needed to use a pack n play and the walking access to all the activities was really nice.  The unit could use some updates for sure, but it was plenty comfortable for us.

Baytowne offers an outdoor ice skating rink during the winter months which the kids loved! They also have a huge playground, several ropes courses, a zip line and a trampoline harnessed jumpy thing!!  The resort is right next to four golf courses if you have any golf lovers and they had a heated small pool and two hot tubs at the resort.  There are several different restaurants within Baytowne as well as some cute stores and ice cream shops for the kids!  It has a little bit of a New Orleans feel as you walk around.  

We ate at this breakfast/lunch spot, 2 Birds, all 3 mornings!! This is about a 5 minute drive from the hotel, but it was so good and so cute!!  I wanted to try everything on the menu plus they had great coffee.

Saturday evening we had a babysitter come to watch the kids while we grabbed dinner close by at Emerils Coastal in Grand Boulevard.  We grabbed some appetizers and wine first at Vint’j Wine Bar first which is always one of our favorites.  This blue cheese and nut pie thing was incredible! I forget what they call it on the menu. 

We had so much fun actually catching Emeril in the kitchen while we were at dinner.  It is an open kitchen and you could see him working all night long. A few of you have asked about our experience and as much as I want to give it rave reviews, we all decided it was just pretty good and not great.   The service that night was not great and some food was better than others.  I would still go back and try it again and I definitely would love to try to make their Sunday jazz brunch.  It looked like so much fun.

The boys played a round of golf on Sunday and we entertained the kids around Baytowne.  They had fun doing all the activities again plus eating ice cream!!

Back in July, we spent almost a week down in our condo in Destin.   It is only an hour drive from where we live which is so nice and it can allow for Matt to commute back and forth to work.  So it is basically just an extra little vacation for me and the kids and this year, Matt just took one day off to enjoy a long weekend at the condo.  I brought our sitter during the week to help me and we enjoyed the pool and beach!

On Thursday evening, our sitter left and Matt came down to join us after work.  Our friends from New Orleans were coming to join us for the weekend to play and we were so excited. 

The Claiborne family arrived on Friday afternoon and the kids were so cute!  They dropped their stuff off in the condo and then everyone was ready to go enjoy the evening down at the pool.  They brought dinner with them for both Friday and Saturday evening which was so kind, so we never had to go out to eat!

We had so much fun spending the weekend with our friends! Meredith and I met in college (but we actually went to different schools) and became fast friends!!  It has been so fun raising kids at the same time and seeing our babies get to play together. 

The weekend went by too fast, but we loved it!  We look forward to the next time!

The last week of July, we had some friends and family down towards Destin and my hubby and I decided to make a trip down to our condo there and have one last hoo-rah with the kiddos before school started.

We drove down Saturday afternoon after a couple of birthday parties that morning and got there in time for dinner.  I went straight out to my favorite spot, the condo balcony.  The sunsets on this balcony always bring me to my happy place.  This condo was passed down to my brothers and I after my Dad passed.  He bought it back in 2004 or 2005 I think.  So it has been a favorite spot for us ever since.

Saturday night, we were actually able to go out to dinner with our friends.  They have a daughter in high school that was so sweet to come over and watch the kids for us while we went to dinner.  We went to an Italian restaurant called Mimmo’s.  We had been hearing great things about this restaurant, but it is in a strip mall and we never seemed to make it there.  But don’t judge a book by its cover, because this place was great!  The inside was really nice inside and we all had a great meal.

Sunday morning, we woke up and headed to Big Kahunas Water park.  I grew up going to this place, but haven’t been since I was a teenager.  Matt and I took all three kids and they had a blast.  We brought Molly (almost one) in a stroller and I would say that was quite a pain.  There are lots of stairs that you have to go up and down through out the park.  Once we got settled, it was kind of nice to have the stroller because she did take a little nap in it for awhile, but it was work.  The park had two great areas for young kids.  We hung out in those areas and then Matt and I just took turns taking the kids on some of the slides.  They were still too short for a lot of them, but they had fun on the ones they could ride.

Monday morning Matt had to head back to work.  I hung out with the kids that day around the condo.  We had a slow morning, swam at the pool and just chilled.  We were a little sad because we were supposed to go meet up with our friends that were on 30A for the week, but Brody started with a cough, so we didn’t want to get anyone else sick.

Monday night, Matt came back down to the condo after work.  It is only about an hour commute for him from the condo to his office.  We were able to have dinner Monday night with my Aunt and Uncle at another Italian restaurant we had never been before.  It is called Pazzo’s and it is also in a strip mall and quite unassuming.  Guess what? The food was great and the decor inside was quite nice.

On Tuesday, our nanny came down and she helped me out with all these rascals while Matt had to go out of town for work.  We woke up and had Krispy Kreme and then got our suits on and headed behind The Back Porch restaurant to hang at the beach.

The water was so clear and gorgeous.  I hadn’t seen it this beautiful all summer long.  We had the best day!  While Molly was napping on the beach, I walked the big kids down to check out the blow up trampoline and banana boats that they had in the water.

Tuesday night I was able to go meet my girlfriends from Atlanta down at Cafe 30A.  They were in town with their kids (who we were supposed to go meet the day before at the beach) and I was so excited to get to catch up with them.

While we were waiting on our table at Cafe30A, I ran into Kate at Lonestar Southern with her family.  I totally fangirled and introduced myself.  She couldn’t have been sweeter and her whole family was just adorable.

On Wednesday, we met friends at the Gulfarium in Pensacola.  I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t even remember the last time I had been there. It had been ages.  The place was so cool and they really had some great shows.  It was pretty crowded and VERY hot, so the kids didn’t last super long; but I am so glad that we went.  I would definitely recommend checking that out if you are in the Destin/Ft. Walton area sometime with kids.

Wednesday evening we ordered in at the condo and started getting ourselves packed up.  We headed home on Thursday and I was sad to leave.  The weather was so beautiful for us that trip.   If we didn’t have plans that next weekend, I was ready to stay for the rest of the week and have meet us back down there for the weekend!!

 I can’t believe it is the last weekend of July already.

We spent half the weekend at home and half the weekend in Destin.

We spent Friday night at home and just grilled out and chilled out. The kids took a fancy bath together in my room and it was so cute.  They put the fire on, used a bath bomb, and we had the bubbles going.  They used our new monogrammed Weezie towels to wipe the bubbles off their hands and faces.  We are in love with our new towels.  They are so soft and look so pretty in our bathroom.

On Saturday morning, we got up and out the door early.  We ate a quick breakfast at Waffle House, went to go visit Matt’s Dad for a bit and then hit two birthday parties back-to-back at the trampoline park.  The kids had blast and loved the new Blob!

Saturday afternoon, we drove down to Destin.  We got there in time to let the kids have a late afternoon swim.  They loved it.  We also lucked out and got to go out to eat that night for a little adult time! We went to Mimmo’s Italian and were kicking ourselves for never going there sooner.  It was so good.  The place is a little deceiving because it is in a shopping plaza, but inside is really nice and the food was great.

Sunday we took the kids to the water park, Big Kahunas. They had such a great time.  I had not been since I was a teenager and I was a little nervous about bringing Molly (11 months old); but she did well.

We made it there for a little over 4 hours which was super happy with.  I wasn’t sure we would make it for longer than two hours.  I think it was about $175 for the 5 of us to get in (Molly being free).  So it is an expensive outing.  There was a lot that I felt like we didnt get to do, but we still felt like we had a fun day.

Sunday evening we ordered pizza from Mimmo’s Italian and had a quiet night at home watching Shark Week.  Brody is really into Shark Week this year and its fun to watch him ask questions and learn about them.

The kids and I are hanging out in Destin for a few extra days to visit with family and friends.  We are just trying to squeeze in every last ounce of Summer.

Last week was Spring Break for the kids and we spent the first part of our week in Fairhope for my nieces wedding where Brody and Madelyn were Flower Girl and Ring Bearer and then spent the second half of the week in Destin with friends!

We arrived down to Destin on Wednesday afternoon and unpacked and got settled in!  I learned quickly that trying to pack for three kids is SO MUCH WORK.  We have quite a bit of baby equipment and things already at the condo down there, but it still never fails that we have a car FULL of stuff.

We spent the first day checking out the pool which was too cold, so we opted for the hot tub.  The kids loved it and were just as happy there.

On Thursday, our friends came down to join us and we all met at Lulu’s in Destin for lunch.  It is the perfect spot because it’s on the bay and they have a big beach for the kids to run and play on. They have chairs and picnic tables outside if you want to sit there and they also have sand toys and a water fountain for the kids to enjoy.

Wednesday night we all hung at the condo and enjoyed our gorgeous sunset.  We cooked this Beach Shrimp recipe which is a favorite when we are down there and it turned out amazing.  All you need is some bread and a salad and your meal is done!

Friday morning was gorgeous even though it was still a tad bit chilly.  We had a slow morning as everyone was waking up and decided to put our swimsuits on and get packed for the beach.

One of the most frequent asked questions I get from other Mama’s on IG is where did I get this pool that Molly is sitting in.  It is the BEST for the beach! You can find it here and get the Medium size.  It folds up so easily and it just stays in our beach bag.  It doesn’t require any inflation and you just unfold it and pop it up.   It’s great by itself or you can add water or sand if you like. It is also great when the ocean is too cold because you can add a little water to this and it will warm up quickly!

Friday night we picked up steaks after the beach and we grilled a nice dinner at the house.   We loved getting all the kids to bed and then eating a late dinner on the balcony to enjoy a little adult time!

Saturday was another beautiful day and instead of hitting the beach again we decided to take the kids to the Track which is a fun arcade/amusement park for all ages!  They had plenty of rides and things to do for both our 3 year olds and our 5 year olds.  They had a ball and the big kids even got to ride their own go-carts.

After the kids had enough at the Track, we took them to lunch at Fudpucker’s.  I had not been to this place in years.  It is definitely very kid friendly and has a playground and a place where you can feed the alligators.  We all agreed that the food was just okay, but it was fun to bring the kids.

Sunday was our last full day and we decided to drive down to 30A and have lunch at The Hub and stop a few places on 30A.  It turned out perfect and the kids had a great time at the Hub.  Everyone could pick what they wanted from the different restaurants there and we were able to snag a picnic table in front of the TV so the men could watch March Madness.  The kids threw the football, tried cart wheels, drove water boats, and played on the artificial grass.

We drove down to Alys Beach from the Hub and decided to let the kids run out some energy at the Splash Pad.  They also have a huge green area that the kids ran on and rolled down the hills.

We got back to the condo after 30A and since they all got a nap in the car on the ride home, they were ready to hit the hot tub again!

We spent our last evening at home.  The boys picked up McGuires Pizza and Sushi for us and we enjoyed one last gorgeous sunset on the balcony.  I had such a hard time leaving after this trip.  I felt like the kids were at such a fun age to enjoy a lot of the activities down in Destin now.  I’m ready to head back for another week!!

We spent the weekend in Destin with friends and the weather was absolute perfection.  We arrived Friday evening in time for dinner and cocktail hour.  We settled in and and got comfy on the back porch.  It’s so pretty in the evenings to watch the sunset.   We made cocktails and appetizers and enjoyed some time visiting.

Our friends brought this delicious pizza dip that was so easy, yet delicious! They have kids almost the exact same ages as ours and they had such a good time playing together.

Wearing this Maisy Swing Dress.  I already owned it in Navy and loved it so much that I bought it in the coral.  Honestly, the color is so much better in person.  I love how bright and vibrant it is.

Both Saturday and Sunday we spent the entire day at the beach.  The kids did so well and we just let the little ones nap at the beach.  The weather was gorgeous, the water was mostly calm, and it was green and beautiful!  We have had so much rain this summer that we’ve had some brown looking water a lot.

We had a great weekend with great friends and as always… we didn’t want it to end!!
